Hollywoodization and Asianization, two different things from two different culture that are connected and try to fit in with each other. According to Klein (2004) mentioned about Hollywoodization and asianization is about "cultural exchange, in the sense to expand consumer preferences and better aesthetic diversity." Somehow if we take a look really carefully, I personally think Hollywood was starting to set their target even wider now not only for Americans but as a biggest movie industry production they were trying to aim world's market by putting a little bit taste of Asianization on the movie in order to aim Asian viewers. Asianization on the Hollywood movie can be seen from some asian cultures on the movie, or even asian actor and actress. Automatically what's is happening right now, the same thing applied to Asia filming production as well with the Hollywoodization.
Even more there are some of the movies that have been remade in order just to make it match with the culture of the movies. So the movies being remade with the same story line, but different title and characters. One of the example is Ju-On, Japan movie production horror movie from 2000 and officially being remade by Hollywood 2004, The Grudge. I have watched both movies, and I personally think that the original one always better, Ju-On was way scarier than The Grudge.

Hollywoodization and asianization not only happened in filming industry, but I think it has impacted in many different aspect of each different cultures, music is one of the example. I feel like any local artists whoever they are, if they are like succesfull in certain countries then for the next goal they would go international and America would definitely be their goal. The perfect example for this case is K-Pop, if you guys know Girl's Generation one of the biggest girl band in Korea, sometimes they released their english song or the english version of their korean songs. I believe after their success in Korea, they were trying to go through in America marketplace as well.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your writing style here. Its slightly disconnected from the formal writing of a literary piece but fits in perfectly with the blog and gives a relaxed tone to the reader. The use of multimedia is effective as it gave me a greater understanding of the growing connection between these two fascinating cultures. You also spoke of how it's not just the film industry, but also the music. This was a great point which has been validated through artists such as Psy making his mark on American culture.

It was an informal writing approach however it was successful in engaging myself as a reader and I believe that is a good characteristic when writing blog posts. Your examples fit well into your argument, and I really like your choice of pictures. Hello. After reading your blog post, I came away with a few bits of information that were quite handy in knowing, however they could have been explained with more precision and depth. Particularly for example, in your explanation of “hollywoodization” and “asianization” although was quite concise and general, it did not (for me) really set the tone for the remainder of the blog. It was more so your own opinion regarding movies you enjoyed/disliked or were frightened from. Some of the little interesting facts you noted were cool to hear, however they did not really benefit your blog post as well as they could have. Also, your particular composition of sentence structure could be somewhat improved; as well the formality too. This blog post was an easy read, from a general point of view; you did a great job and should continue blogging after the course is finished.

ReplyDeleteThis was a great blog. You used Klein's reading really well in supporting your statements. Your videos and images were really helpful in adding insight into your blog, allowing a visual example. Your style of writing was also appealing, although informal it allowed an easy, relaxed approach when reading it. You had some really great movie examples, some even that i had never even heard of so was great to get an education on some asian films :)
It was also interesting to hear your point of view on the topic at the end. Well done on your final blog!

ReplyDeleteYour post this week is very entertaining, especially by giving a variety of example from horror movie to kpop girl band. But perhaps you can emphasize a little bit more on Klein's theory so that we would have more insight on her views.I really do agree on you that both hollywood and asian film industry are aiming for larger audience. But also the way i see it, what happened today is that the entertainment industry just got an impact from globalization which is a hybridization. Where everyone try to mix and match these different elements from different cultures and the result is what the industry serves us today. A mixture of different cultures.

ReplyDeleteWhile you have managed to show some grasp of Klein's prescribed reading this week, I think your blog would have benefited from explaining the concepts further. Your blog lacked scholarly material and your personal opinion really overshadowed your argument which gives it much less credibility. Also your incorrect grammar made it harder to read, making it had to follow the piece.
However, I really liked that you took a different take in talking about how Asia is becoming more hollywoodized and from what i've seen from K-pop, I definitely agree! I also liked your use of visual material, it definitely gave your blog more of an edge and did seem to keep me interested (however make sure you the images you use are compatible with blogger as one of the images did not seem to work).

ReplyDeleteyou have a great and clear understanding in this blog and also you give a good example for this. i enjoyed when i read your blog, its make me thinking about difference between asian culture and hollywood culture such as western culture. there are a big distinction in here, but i think their culture is totally seen by their creation when they make some music and film. we can see from their creation right. this is an impact of globalisation in modern ways. :)
