Week 9: Hollywoodization and Asianization

Hollywoodization and Asianization, two different things from two different culture that are connected and try to fit in with each other. According to Klein (2004) mentioned about Hollywoodization and asianization is about "cultural exchange, in the sense to expand consumer preferences and better aesthetic diversity." Somehow if we take a look really carefully, I personally think Hollywood was starting to set their target even wider now not only for Americans but as a biggest movie industry production they were trying to aim world's market by putting a little bit taste of Asianization on the movie in order to aim Asian viewers. Asianization on the Hollywood movie can be seen from some asian cultures on the movie, or even asian actor and actress. Automatically what's is happening right now, the same thing applied to Asia filming production as well with the Hollywoodization.

Even more there are some of the movies that have been remade in order just to make it match with the culture of the movies. So the movies being remade with the same story line, but different title and characters. One of the example is Ju-On, Japan movie production horror movie from 2000 and officially being remade by Hollywood 2004, The Grudge. I have watched both movies, and I personally think that the original one always better, Ju-On was way scarier than The Grudge.
*PS: sorry for the disturbing pictures. I found out this pictures a bit creepy as well.

Hollywoodization and asianization not only happened in filming industry, but I think it has impacted in many different aspect of each different cultures, music is one of the example. I feel like any local artists whoever they are, if they are like succesfull in certain countries then for the next goal they would go international and America would definitely be their goal. The perfect example for this case is K-Pop, if you guys know Girl's Generation one of the biggest girl band in Korea, sometimes they released their english song or the english version of their korean songs. I believe after their success in Korea, they were trying to go through in America marketplace as well.
PS: after we discussed horror creepy things, better watch this pretty girls dancing and good music :)

Week 8: Global Celebrity

Global celebrity is definitely a global phenomenon because it will changes as the time goes by and being replaced with another booming celebrity that been spotted by medias. "Celebrity has helped organise the associated culture industries and in that way becomes a supporting and connected economy." (Marshall 2010) Different with other popular celebrity in Hollywood like Brad Pitt and Megan Fox for example, I personally think Jackie Chan worked really really really hard to be able to go through into Western and Hollywood market place. Was not an easy things for Jackie Chan to win different market production in many different filming production.

(The Myth, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/81/The_Myth_film.jpg)

For Jackie Chan to went international into Hollywood production after won people's heart in Asia with his action was like a next step ahead. After success and received so many awards in China, Hongkong and Asia filming production, Jackie Chan went through and built a new career in Hollywood filming production which needs to adaptation in culture and nationality.

(The Spy Next Door, http://cartelesmix.es/images/CartelesS/supercanguro1012.jpg)

If we could see in the past, when the first time Jackie Chan played in his first Hollywood movie that people we realised that he was a new asian actor in the Hollywood because people just can tell from his accent or his english skill that was just new for him. However because of the culture improvement and we compared with the last Jackie Chan's Hollywood movie with his first movie, we could see how well he adapted with Hollywood new culture.

Somehow automatically Jackie Chan just set up the standard, a high standard for non-Western celebrity that planning to go international and go through Hollywood filming production.

Week 7: Participatory Media

Sega, Nintendo, GameBoy, PlayStation 1, 2 and 3, PSP, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, and PC games. They are all the games that I have participated in for the rest of my life so far, and people can see now how I was really into that video game things excluding some games on the phone. Different with television, radio or internet, even though gaming needs internet however video game gives people to participate over everything in the game to direct the character and play the story line as well. "Experiences from other media industries, participatory approaches and prosumerism have been integrated into gameing culture and the the computer game industry value generation process." (Jockel, Will & Schwarzer 2008) Video game could be so successful and reached many participatory because video game gives multimediality, virtuality, interactivity, and connectivity for players in order for player to connect with other players and let the video games spread wider and reach even more participatory.

Even for some people, they are not a game participatory but in essence of the media culture people who get involved with social media, mobil phone, blogs, internet are still a participatory in new media. Because if we can see these days, all of our profile identities about what we are all doing are exposed and connected with each other. For example, from any games that connected with any social media, like you can ask for extra points or help from your friends on Facebook.

Talking about gaming culture, lots of platforms of gaming console come up with same video games nowadays, in essence to improve the participatory of the game. Even more as part of the culture some video games came up with the same story line in many different series of the game. For example Mario Bros that needs to safe Princess Peach from Bowser, at the very beginning of Nintendo, until now the newest Mario Bros they got the same story just the different gameplay.
(Mario Bros and Peach, http://www.rpgfan.com/pics/papermario2/art-001.jpg)

Another way for gaming culture to improve their production and participatory is with expand their game series and make it as a movie, that is some game production do. Like what Final Fantasy series do, after they success with their gaming series production they make it as a movie and it went pretty well to reach even more participatory in their game.

Week 6: Blogs in Blogosphere

I write whatever I want and whatever I like. Yes that rule applies to everyone that interested to start or to write a blog. Again because of new media and internet, people can call blogs as a new diary where it is like an exposed diary where people can read and share anything on it. Once you start to write and post your blog, that means you are part of the blogosphere.

(Example of Blog, http://googleblog.blogspot.com.au)

Blog is not only about writing stuff, moreover people could also post their own photos into their blog or even video and call it vlog or video blog. Believe it or not, doing blogs could lead into a bright career if you keep posting and lots of people love your blog. If you know Garypeppergirl a model and fashion blogger that is very famous among different countries and in the middle of many social medias. She is doing many different kinds of photo shoot and products endorsement from one countries to another counties and post it into her blog.

(Garypeppergirl Fashion Blog, http://garypeppergirl.com/2013/09/life-is-beautiful-with-lancome)

Talking about blogs and career, sometimes we need to be careful dealing with social media and internet because it could be a boomerang for some people. "The Latter interpretation of emloyee cynicism provided by CMS scholars and argue that being cynical towards corporate culture initiatives need not necessarily lead to an imaginary sense of power." (Richards & Komala 2013) People need to use social media and internet wisely because they need to know which is part of privacy and private stuff that could not be posted on internet. Or else something bad might happened to them, like losing their job for some cases, because it was such an unprofessional things to do blabbering the job outside workplace.

Week 5: Prosumers in Public Sphere

This is exactly who we are in public sphere. Being 6 parties in 1 time.

I just knew it that is what they call us a “prosumers”. Prosumer stands for producer and consumer which like what Ritzer and Jurgenson said it "involves both production and consumption rather than focusing just on either on production or the other one which is consumption." (Rtizer & Jurgenson, 2010) On social media, especially me, I can say I really get attached and involved with any social media because  we consume a lot of things from internet like some benefits, information and so on. In other way we do also share what we have through internet like uploading our datas for our personal identity. For some cases presumption could be a good opportunity for doing business in this new era. Like what I know, YouTube will pay someone that has massive viewers and subscriber on particular video YouTubers.

The public sphere itself is a domain of our social life where such a thing as public opinion can be formed, where citizen deal with matters or general interest without being subject to coercion to express and publicies their views. A modernist concept because it assumes that there are core truths common to all human. Because the public sphere is not the state but public sphere belongs to civil society and the people. Public sphere also holds the government of the day accountable to society via the media and we also need to make sure that media is not captured by government objectives.

But do you guys know everything that we share on internet are under ubervaillance. Lots of cases showed how internet has being misused and be a ‘boomerang’ for some people because they did not use it wisely.

Week 4: Pirates and Plagiarism

Piracy and plagiarism basically are the two same things, what makes them different is just the pirated material. Technically both of them are like stealing someone else’s work without any permission. Even most of people they did not realize if they ever done a piracy from any material like music, movies, and many more

According to Chalkey (2012, pg. 237) "pirate or piracy is the act of copying material that we have not paid for. It can be for personal use or in some case, commercial gain. For any motivation to do pirate, the most common one is for personal use and share it."

So why people do pirate because it is free and easier to get, people will always think that. Why should they spend lots of money if they can get it free. People do not need to go to any store and spend their money to get what they wanted. But piracy is piracy for any reasons. Another reason people do pirate is because everyone else is doing the same thing and people might think, if nobody see them do it so there is no way they can prove anything from it.

There is a study that been doing research about piracy towards some countries specifically around 2011, that stating there is 62% of Central and Eastern Europe doing piracy as the highest presentation of other counties. http://globalstudy.bsa.org/2011/

For those remixers like mashup artists, DJs, pastiche and bricolage producers and digital media artist, well we could not just call them as doing pirate because in this art and music industry I believe there is an influence between each artists or each songs from the idea, genre, style or anything. So we cannot really call a mashup artists, DJs and others are doing pirate or plagiarism as long as they give credit to the owner or write the original song in order to give respect for the owner.

Different in Indonesia, lots of artists like singer they do plagiarism the song, idea, or even dance choreography from artists other country like K-Pop or whatever it is. (I do follow some news in Indonesia sometimes)
Talking about piracy, and since I'm from Indonesia as well I'm not sure piracy is a big deal here in Indonesia. If you guys want to know, Indonesia is like doing huge huge piracy. Just want to share like, there are lots of place like in Indonesia they are selling lots of copied CD and DVD, movies and music and sell it with very very cheap price it is like Rp7,000 which means about 7cents. Makes me even confuse consider it as benefits for me or what.
