Piracy
and plagiarism basically are the two same things, what makes them different is
just the pirated material. Technically both of them are like stealing someone
else’s work without any permission. Even
most of people they did not realize if they ever done a piracy from any material
like music, movies, and many more
According
to Chalkey
(2012, pg. 237) "pirate or piracy is the act of copying material that we have
not paid for. It can be for personal use or in some case, commercial gain. For
any motivation to do pirate, the most common one is for personal use and share
it."
So
why people do pirate because it is free and easier to get, people will always
think that. Why should they spend lots of money if they can get it free. People
do not need to go to any store and spend their money to get what they wanted. But
piracy is piracy for any reasons. Another
reason people do pirate is because everyone else is doing the same thing and people might think, if nobody see them do it so there
is no way they can prove anything from it.
There is a study that been doing research about piracy towards some countries specifically around 2011, that stating there is 62% of Central and Eastern Europe doing piracy as the highest presentation of other counties. http://globalstudy.bsa.org/2011/
For those remixers like mashup artists, DJs, pastiche and bricolage producers and digital media artist, well we could not just call them as doing pirate because in this art and music industry I believe there is an influence between each artists or each songs from the idea, genre, style or anything. So we cannot really call a mashup artists, DJs and others are doing pirate or plagiarism as long as they give credit to the owner or write the original song in order to give respect for the owner.
Different in Indonesia, lots of artists like singer they do plagiarism the song, idea, or even dance choreography from artists other country like K-Pop or whatever it is. (I do follow some news in Indonesia sometimes)
Talking about piracy, and since I'm from Indonesia as well I'm not sure piracy is a big deal here in Indonesia. If you guys want to know, Indonesia is like doing huge huge piracy. Just want to share like, there are lots of place like in Indonesia they are selling lots of copied CD and DVD, movies and music and sell it with very very cheap price it is like Rp7,000 which means about 7cents. Makes me even confuse consider it as benefits for me or what.
